While it seems like the world has made some progress on body confidence and acceptance, one place where that dies is Instagram.
Especially Instagram advertisements that are purely made to fat-shame.
Recently, Demi Lovato exposed one of these ads, posting a screenshot of it to her Instagram story. The ad showed the game called Game of Sultans, which compared a larger cartoon girl, to a skinnier cartoon girl. On it, it read, “My Daughter. Obese. Friend’s Daughter. Pretty.”
“Why is this fat shaming bullshit on my feed?” Demi wrote over the image. “So many things wrong with this ad. 1. You can be ‘pretty’ at any weight.”
Demi has previously struggled with an eating disorder and has always been pretty candid about her struggle to accept her body.
She finished her post by imploring Instagram to do better.
“With how aware people are becoming of mental health and mental illnesses, I expect you guys to know better by allowing this advertisement to be allowed on your app. And shame on the game.”
TMZ reports that the ad has since been removed from the app, according to a rep for Instagram.
“We’re sorry. This ad was approved by mistake,” the company told the outlet. “We reviewed it again and removed it from future delivery in people’s feeds.”
It didn’t take long for Kim Kardashian to weigh in and praise Demi for her efforts.
The clapping hands emojis show that Kim completely agrees with Demi, however, it does make some people question her authenticity as she is constantly promoting diet and skinny tea type products on her own Instagram.
