If you watched Netflix’s Enola Holmes this week and asked yourself, ‘hey, why didn’t Enola and Tewksbury kiss at the end? All that build up, and for what?” then you’re not alone. Speaking with Girlfriend separately in the lead up to the film, the show’s leads Millie Bobby Brown (Enola) and Louis Partridge (Tewksbury) told us that a kiss was originally meant to be in the film, but on the actual day, the pair decided against it.
I mean, we were basically DESTROYED after the pair’s cheeky lil hand kiss, can you imagine the pure emotional carnage from a peck on the cheek?
“There was actually in the script—yeah, maybe I shouldn’t tell you, it’s a little bit of inside information—there was meant to be a kiss scene,” Partridge admitted. “Well not a kiss scene but like a little kiss on the cheek or something at the gates when I’m in my top hat about to go into to vote. But we decided on the day to leave it sort of up in the air or leave it hanging, which I think was a really good call. Because it’s sort of ambiguous, we don’t really know.”
“There was a moment that could have been a bigger moment and we could have kissed. But you know what, I don’t think every relationship needs to end like that,” added Millie. “And I think that it was more powerful left unsaid.”
“You know, we really told the conclusion of their relationship, through dialogue and through our eyes, and through our acting, I don’t think you needed to kiss to seal the deal. I think that the audience was satisfied, I was satisfied. And so was Louis, and it just didn’t feel like the right time.”
“And it also I think it’s quite innocent,” Louis said, seemingly adding on to Millie’s point but saying it in a separate interview. “It’s not one thing, that relationship, there’s elements of romance, obviously, but then they also get on really, really well. And so I really liked it. You know, they don’t have to define sort of where they are and they just get on well together as people so I hope the internet received it like that, and not just like, ‘oh my god, they’re in love.’”
But fear not honorary members of the Holmesbury nation! Millie reckons that if we get future films, we could get what you’re hoping for.
“Hopefully, if Netflix renews us for another sequel, hopefully we get to kind of give the audience something like that in the future,” she said. “But Louis and I worked very hard at bonding and creating a very close bond so that this looked as realistic as possible. And luckily now he’s just one of my closest friends. But working with him on this bond was definitely a learning experience. And it really showed on screen which I was very grateful.”
