Right before she hits the road with Niall Horan for his Australian and New Zealand leg of Flicker World Tour, get to know the country sweetheart behind those killer vocals on Seeing Blind.
What are you most looking forward to on tour?
The travel aspect is going to be really exciting this time round, I’ve never been to Australia so I feel so fortunate that my career given me the opportunity where I can go across the world in a way that I haven’t before. I’m so excited to see your beautiful country!
What the tour was announced, what was the response from Niall’s fans like?
I’ve really felt the support from Niall’s fans. I’ve never toured with anyone in pop, I’ve only ever done country tours before so this is a really new game for me. I think that Niall and his fans are a reflection of him; he’s so warm and down to earth, and his fans met us with that same reception. They’re so sweet on Twitter and Instagram and just excited to see what we do. They’ve discovered my music in the process too, which is really cool.
How did your collaboration with Niall come about?
Shortly after the Grammys last year Niall reached out to me and he really loved my voice and he had the song Seeing Blind already written, but was looking for the right voice to be on it. He reached out to me over email and was really polite and just said, “I love your voice and I would love to have you on this song.” I heard the song and immediately loved it and I thought I could hear myself on it, even though it was from an email and we had never met before. Music brings people together and that song, it brought the two of us into each other’s lives in musical way.
How did you first meet Niall?
He came to Nashville shortly after I recorded my vocals for Seeing Blind and he came up with his band and they’d never really been to Nashville and explored it before. So I was here, and there were some bars where I live where we’d go and hang out and have a couple drinks and get to know each other. It was him and his band and me and my husband Ryan, we were all just hanging out as a group at this bar in East Nashville, and we were instantly like old friends. He just came across so normal—I know that’s weird to say but he is! He’s just a normal guy and he’s funny and really charming, and obviously really humble. He’s not into the hype of himself, which a lot of artists in his position could be, but he is about the music and he’s a real person, so I really respected him after that first meet.
What’s your favourite One Direction song?
It’s hard to choose but I think the one that I always end up playing at parties, even my bachelorette party, is Steal My Girl, it’s just such a classic. I remember going to see their movie; I was a One Direction fan before I even met Niall. I was already a fan of his music and when he put his first single out as a solo artist I was so impressed. Each one of those boys broke off and created their own lane which historically is a really hard thing to do, especially from bands that are groups to begin with and I thought that he did it with such originality and I love his sort of rootsy/acoustic/songwriter vibe that he brings to the table and I think that his fans are really endeared to that.
Have you played golf with Niall?
I’ve never played golf ever, I’ve played mini golf, but I’ve never been on a green and played golf with the big guys. I know that he is a huge golfer and a huge golf fan. Maybe I’ll learn a thing or two, but you never know!
