The young star suffered from epilepsy, which led to a fatal seizure in his sleep on Saturday night.

The 20-year-old actor’s death has left the world in complete shock, especially since his acting career was on the rise. He had starred in films such as Disney’s Descendants and Grown Ups/Grown Ups 2, alongside actors Adam Sandler and Salma Hayek.

The Disney star was found unresponsive by his roommate in his Los Angeles home on the weekend. Paramedics arrived on scene but were unable to revive him, as TMZ reports.

Boyce’s family were the first to announce the sad news on Sunday, revealing his death was the “result of an ongoing medical condition”.

Now we know it was epilepsy – a neurological disorder which triggers unpredictable seizures.

While there has not been an official autopsy on the body yet, it may begin this week, including a full toxicology report and blood tests. It will take weeks before the official cause of death will be determined, however, law enforcement has already passed it as a “natural death”.

Boyce’s family is also adamant that it was his battle with epilepsy that led to his death.

“It is with a profoundly heavy heart that we report that this morning we lost Cameron,” Boyce’s family said in a statement on Sunday.

“He passed away in his sleep due to a seizure which was a result of an ongoing medical condition for which he was being treated.

“The world is now undoubtedly without one of its brightest lights, but his spirit will live on through the kindness and compassion of all who knew and loved him.

“We are utterly heartbroken and ask for privacy during this immensely difficult time as we grieve the loss of our precious son and brother”.

Boyce dedicated a lot of himself to charity work too.

Last year Boyce was honoured with the Pioneering Spirit Award at the Thirst Gala, which is sponsored by the Thirst Project – a nonprofit organisation where Boyce raised $30,000 to build wells for clean drinking water in Swaziland.

Since the news, tributes for the young man have been rolling in on social media, many from his cast-mates, most describing him as a “talented performer,” with “a heart of gold”.

“From a young age, Cameron Boyce dreamed of sharing his extraordinary artistic talents with the world. As a young man, he was fueled by a strong desire to make a difference in peoples’ lives through his humanitarian work,” a Disney Channel spokesman said. “He was an incredibly talented performer, a remarkably caring and thoughtful person and, above all else, he was a loving and dedicated son, brother, grandson and friend.

“We offer our deepest condolences to his family, castmates and colleagues and join his many millions of fans in grieving his untimely passing. He will be dearly missed.”

Adam Sandler also tribute to him, writing: ‘”Too young. Too sweet. Too funny. Just the nicest, most talented, and most decent kid around. Loved that kid. Cared so much about his family. Cared so much about the world. Thank you, Cameron, for all you gave to us. So much more was on the way. All our hearts are broken. Thinking of your amazing family and sending our deepest condolences.”

His Jessie co-star Skai Jackson also paid tribute on Instagram writing: “I don’t even know where to start… I am at a loss for words. I never thought in a million years I would be writing this. Cam, you were one of a kind… Thank you so much for being the big brother I never had.”

Salma Hayek wrote: “I had the privilege to play Cameron’s mother in Grownups 1 and 2 and we stayed in touch through the years He was spirited, talented, kind, generous, funny and a shining light. His joy will live in our hearts forever as he goes on dancing and shining elsewhere.”

Boyce’s first break-out role came at the young age of nine in the horror film Mirrors.

He later starred with Shia LaBeouf the thriller movie Eagle Eye

After these roles, Cameron broke into the Disney scene, on the popular show Jessie, opposite Debby Ryan.

This is where Cameron played Luke Ross in the comedy, which went for seasons.

The actor also starred in the animated version of Marvel’s Spider-Man, and played the famed role of Carlos De Vil, the son of Cruella De Vil, in Disney’s popular franchise Descendants, alongside Dove Cameron.
